Command An Army Formations - Best Layouts Explained

Battlefield layouts for Command An Army: where to place tanks, ranged units and supports so your army pushes waves further.

Quick Answer: What Makes a Formation Good?

Three rules carry almost every wave in Command An Army: tanks in front to absorb the first contact, ranged and caster units in back where they deal damage uninterrupted, and healers in the middle โ€” close enough to reach the front line, protected enough to survive. Everything else is refinement. Press Attack on a formation that follows those three rules and you will clear content that raw unit quality alone cannot.

๐Ÿ’ก Watch your first attack from the deployment screen: whichever unit dies first is telling you exactly where the formation is wrong.

Placement Rules by Unit Role

Role decides position, not rarity. A Legendary Dragon placed where it tanks the whole wave performs worse than a Common Archer row placed correctly. This table is the placement shorthand we use for every layout on this page:

Placement Rules by Unit Role
Unit RolePositionWhy
Tank (Golem, Titan)Front line, centerAbsorbs the first enemy contact and holds the line
Melee (Swordsman, Spearman)Front line, flanksAdds bodies around the tank without blocking its space
Ranged (Archer, Crossbow)Back lineFights the whole wave without taking contact damage
Caster (Witch, Wizard)Back line, centerHighest damage-per-placement; must stay alive to matter
Support (Healer)Middle of the formationHeal range reaches the front while staying behind it
Boost (Rookie/Captain Commander)Middle, behind the healerBuffs your army from safety โ€” it should never take a hit
Air (Balloon, Dragon)Flanks or over the frontHits targets ground melee cannot reach

Four Named Formations That Work

These are the four layouts we test with and recommend, named so you can rebuild them in seconds. Unit names reference the current 14-unit roster; substitute within the same role if you have not unlocked the exact unit yet โ€” the shape matters more than the specific name.

Four Named Formations That Work
FormationFront LineMiddleBack LineBest For
Budget WallSwordsman + SpearmanHealerArcher + CrossbowNew accounts spending cash, not Gems
Balanced PushGolemHealer + Rookie CommanderWizard + CrossbowThe default all-round layout for most waves
Ranged DeathballTitanHealerWizard + Archer + BalloonWaves that clump โ€” maximum damage per second
Legend StackTitan + GolemHealer + Captain CommanderDragon + WizardLate-game pushes and leaderboard attempts
๐Ÿ’ก When a wave stalls, upgrade the back line before the front โ€” a tank that lives longer with no damage behind it just dies later.

Spell Timing: Freeze, Fireball, Heal, Rage, Poison

Spells turn a losing wave into a win, but only when they are timed. All five current spells โ€” Freeze, Fireball, Heal, Rage and Poison โ€” are reactive tools: cast them at the moment below, not on cooldown. A wasted early Fireball is a full spell with nothing to show for it.

Spell Timing: Freeze, Fireball, Heal, Rage, Poison
SpellBest Moment to Cast
FreezeWhen a fresh enemy wave clumps together โ€” frozen clumps take your full back-line damage with zero reply
FireballWhen enemies stack tightly on your front line โ€” one cast hits the whole pack
HealWhen your front line dips below half, not after โ€” a dead tank heals for nothing
RageAt the start of your push into a big wave โ€” the damage boost pays for itself over the full fight
PoisonAgainst long, tanky waves โ€” damage over time wins fights that outlast burst damage

Test, Adjust, Repeat

Formation skill in Command An Army is a loop, not a template. Deploy, attack, and watch the first ten seconds: if the front line collapses, add a tank or move the healer forward; if the back line clears too slowly, trade a melee slot for a ranged unit; if your commander dies, it is placed too far forward. Rebuild, attack again. The formation page on your screen is always one adjustment from clearing the wave that blocked you.

๐Ÿ’ก Save your experiment budget for stuck waves โ€” if a formation clears comfortably, the next Gem is better spent on the summon pool than on reinventing a working layout.
