Swordsman vs Archer
Swordsman vs Archer in Command An Army: the $50 melee blocker or the $150 ranged damage dealer? Which unit earns its slot first and when to upgrade.
Verdict
Buy Swordsmen first for the frontline, then Archers behind them. One Swordsman alone pushes nothing; one Archer alone dies instantly. Together they clear early waves.
Quick Answer
Swordsmen ($50) are your first purchase — cheap bodies that block enemies while Archers ($150) deal damage from safety. Buy 3-4 Swordsmen to form a line, then add Archers behind them. This two-unit combo carries you through the first third of progression.

When Swordsman Wins
Swordsmen win in the first 10 minutes of any server. They are the cheapest blocker, and without a frontline your ranged units die instantly. Buy Swordsmen when: you have less than $500 cash, you have no frontline, or you need bodies for offline attacks.
When Archer Wins
Archers win once you have a frontline established. They deal more damage per hit, stay safe behind melee, and their damage-per-cash is the best in the Common tier. Buy Archers when: you already have 2-3 Swordsmen, you need sustained damage, or you are saving for Healer at $800.
The Winning Combo
The optimal early strategy is not Swordsman OR Archer — it is both. One row of Swordsmen in front, Archers behind, click Attack. That two-unit formation carries you further than any single expensive unit at this stage. Upgrade Archers before Swordsmen: same cash, more distance.
